NFLN: Top 10 QBs of the 90s

I just saw this on NFLN (haven't seen it on the net yet). I don't know what process they use to develop their list, but the personalities they had commentating during the show... most didn't like Favre as the #1 QB of the 90s.

I remember that I enjoyed watching him play. Luckiest SOB to ever play the game. I never rooted for him though, it was like watching Barry Sanders. You know you're watching greatness.

Still, I don't have a favorite & from the names on the list, I want to say Jim Kelly. I know he never won the Super Bowl, but to get there four times, that's gotta say something. I was extremely happy to see him go into the HOF. Sorry to hear about his current fight with cancer... but yeah. If I had to pick one, Jim Kelly was, imo, the best QB of the 90s.

Who would you pick?
 
Steve Young. For me he was the total package at qb. His peak was short lived after stop offs in the USFL & TB, and then sitting behind arguably the greatest ever, but during that peak he was a fine tuned machine behind center.
 
I despise the Cowboys but Aikman should be #1. 3 superbowl wins.

How is Jeff George on the list and in front of Cunningham?

I agree about Aikman. He's always overlooked because of the great team around him, but I think he's still considered one of the most accurate passer in league history. And three rings in four seasons is not by accident.

I'd put Aikman, Young, Elway, before Favre. Marino is more of an '80's QB to me.

How the heck Jeff George makes the list with those greats is beyond me. It almost discredits the list to have him on it.

I may bend too far backwards on not pushing Aikman but you nailed what was special about him. He didn't try to make a ball catchable. He tried to stick it on the upper right side of the second 8 and then next play stuck it lower left side of the 1st 8. Not flashy but he took advantage of every asset JJ gave him.

I appreciate Aikman. When I speak of ball placement, understanding ball placement, throwing receivers open & all that, he's the standard.

But to me, Jim Kelly was the Peyton Manning of his day. The QB, OC, Field general... he operated the offense like an extension of himself, machine-like, calculating, precise...

Still, looking at that list I could easily see an argument for at least four of them.

I can see him on the list but if he's in any position other than last then the list is broken.
 
I'd probably go with Elway, Aikman and Young 1, 2, 3. I'd have Kelly maybe 4 or 5.

Jeff George is probably on the list because who are you going to replace him with? Brunell, Rypien, Chris Chandler, Brad Johnson maybe? Not a lot left to choose from, but I'd probably still take all of them ahead of George.

I would definitely put Esiason ahead of George. Honestly, I'd put Chandler ahead of George, and Rypien or Frerotte, whichever of those won a Super Bowl. TBH, I might even put Dave Krieg ahead of him. I'd put Stan Humphries ahead of George. Hell, I'd probably put Testaverde ahead of George.

I'm not a fan of Jeff George, I guess.
 
I hated Elway as a player and I hate him as a GM.

He was the best of the 90's though. He dragged those first few teams to the SB's that he lost. Then he finally won two more later on in his career. Dude went to 5 SB's though.

After that it is easily Favre.


Steve Young was a great QB, but he didn't start for a long enough period of time to be considered the best.


Aikman was a great QB, but benefited from the players around him a lot more than they benefited from him.

How in the world would anyone put Aikman over Marino?


If Marino was on the Boys, man that was have been pretty sick. Marino threw the best ball I've ever seen and then Warren Moon after that.

Kelly is underrated for sure. People never give him the props he deserves because he didn't win a SB, but that game against the Giants wasn't his fault. Norwood missed that kick, and Kelly had them right there for the win.
