The Texans played the best team in the league on the road. They had their moments but in the end came up short.
What went well:
1) Third down efficiency: Same as the Chiefs, they were 7-13 on 3rd down with some key conversions. Even still, missed a couple due to drops or poor execution.
2) LB play: I thought To’o To’o and Harris did a great job flying around and making plays all game. They were asked to do a lot and for the most part got the job done.
3) Tank Dell: This was his best game all season. He looked like he was finally back to his pre-injury form for the first time all season. And then…
What did not go well:
1) Tank Dell injury: Very unfortunate for Dell. That one hurts. Seeing Dell to that point gave me hope the Texans actually could win this game. The Chiefs had no answer for him to that point. Then after his injury the wind was taken out of the team’s sails. Kaimi missed an XP. The defense bounced back and held the Chiefs on a 4th down conversion attempt but Stroud was clearly off mentally with two delay of game penalties and running out of bounds behind the LOS instead of throwing it away. Young player mistakes he does not normally make.
2) Unforced errors: The Chiefs are the masters of winning the close games. You can complain about the refs all you want but the fact of the matter is the Texans committed more mental mistakes than the Chiefs and that was the difference in this game. Small lapses in judgment like the Stroud mistakes I mentioned, missed XP, Lassiter or Okudah getting caught peaking by Mahomes resulting in tds or chunk plays. Blockers standing around not blocking anyone when the Chiefs blitz leading to an easy sack. You want to beat the Chiefs in Arrowhead? You can’t make silly mistakes. And the Texans did just that today.
3) Lack of big plays by defense: A bit unfair to add here? Perhaps, but this team wins games on the back of its defense this season. They have to make impact plays to beat a team like the Chiefs. Only 1 sack on Mahomes and no turnovers forced. Anderson/Hunter were held in check aside from a handful of pressures between them. No impact plays by Stingley. The stars of this team have to make plays. Not going to be enough to beat the Chiefs with this year’s offense. Throw in Nico and Mixon’s lack of big plays as well today. Stars have to make the plays to beat the best. Player of the game was Dell despite the early exit.
