Texans Hire Nick Caley as New OC

If/Can he bring Kromer to be the new Oline coach?

Wished he had experience calling plays, but hopefully he learned something with McVay
Of the available people with play calling experience, who were you interested in?

That's just it, and I'm about to sound a touch hypocritical; but excluding Chip Kelly (who I don't think was ever an option) I like Caley over the guys with play calling experience (Nixon, who I'm pretty sure was the only interviewee with exp). Might be more a fear of the unknown...again.

Huh, a tight end Coach. I was hoping more for a quarterback type but hey, maybe they will go hard after Harold Fannin a guy I like.

Not a fan of the hire, but I hope he proves me wrong. His experience seems like Slowik 2.0, minus the PFF stint.

He was a passing game coordinator too.

The McVay tree hasn’t been a disappointment.

And McVay does make adjustments to his game plan if it isn’t working.

So hopefully Caley learned that too.

“Nick” “C”aley and “Nick” “C”aserio have more than their first name and first letter in their last name in common.

Both went to John Carroll University.

Both Nick’s were with the Patriots when they were on top of the hill.

I suspect these guys know each other pretty well and Caley has plenty of experience at 42 years old. He’s still coaching TE’s up, but he added passing game coordinator to his resume with the Rams. Rams had a nice season.

Maybe it’s time for his shot.
Yes it is.. here we come ready or not.

Shouldn't they have hired a WR coach than? (j/k but I see Fannin as just a big WR and not a TE)
I totally agree on Fannin but I guess this guy is as close as it comes to a passing Guru. I was more interested in an quarterback expert. I guess Johnson will hang around for that?

There are similarities in that Caley started out as a defensive coach (10 years at 7 schools) before moving to the NFL as an offensive coach (8 seasons in New Egland, 2 with the Rams). Caley turned down the Patriots OC gig last year, and the Jets OC this cycle. Caley has been picky and he has picked the Texans as much as they've picked him. I'm ready to see what he's got.

He has joint background with the other Nick C. in New England which leads to that the GM had some say in this manner.

Most folks seemed to be saying we needed an older more experienced type OC who also had
head coaching experience, but without even any OC background at all this looks like we had to settle on a leftover.
But who knows maybe this guy is very talented, an excellent teacher & communicator who clicks immediately with CJ while developeing a very close and positive relationship.
I dunno I wonder if the Rams offense is radically or just marginally different from what CJ has become accustomed to playing in the last couple years here in Houston?

No issue with the hire. I mean after all, if there’s an offensive coordinator out there available there’s a reason (minus Chip). The odds were heavy it would be someone who didn’t call plays previously but was involved under a successful offensive staff.

It’s all about what his mindset is. Problem with Slowpoke was he lacked flexibility or capability to adjust when it was obvious defenses were keyed in after year one. So the question will be can this guy adjust and show some flexibility in his play calling instead of run up the middle every first down until we have a third and long. That’s not to mention the pass protection scheme which for us just didn’t exist consistently…. At all.

Only time will tell and he’s coming from a solid foundation. Looking forward to a fresh approach.

We’ll see if this proves to be right, but if Jerrod stays in the building as QB coach then it makes sense that CJ gets to keep the guy he likes in his ear and the OC isn’t someone who’s going to clash with that job also.

Now, to my mind, hiring as someone who comes from a passing coordinator background opens them up to hire an OL coach with rushing coordinator in their titles, hopefully allowing them to net a premier guy at that position.

OL has been poor 2 years running and they ran out of excuses the 2nd year, Mixon put up a decent season but man were those some hard yards he had to run, need to open up some space for him and give him an easier time, and also establish the run rather than feasting in garbage time in the games where we do lead, which often came off defensive and ST heroics!

I would have preferred an experienced guy who wasn't going anywhere.

Doesn't look like the Texans looked at anyone with that experience anyone was excited about.

As far as new guys go, it seems "they" are saying Caley is the best of the bunch.

️ “Yeah, I’m a big super fan of his [Sean]. The type of scheme he runs, the way he calls it, the way he uses his guys in motion, and just a whole bunch of different things. He seems like a good guy and he just had some tips and pointers. Also showed me a lot of love, which I appreciate, but I appreciate him more than he knows.

Just watching film, not even knowing him, just like getting better at the stuff that he does in that offense along with [QB] Matt [Stafford] and those guys. So, it’s definitely just an honor just to know that he knows me, which is dope

It's radically different. The entire playbook is in Vulcan.. Here's one play.

That's Spider 2 Y Banana in English.

Again, I think it's the heat. Doesn't matter who our HC/OC is, his experience, his philosophy, we run on 1st down.

I predict Nick Caley gets the job...

Honestly I'm pretty good with this. You take your shot at a young guy and hope you find gold. It's a genuinely solid attempt at finding the answer. That's all we can really ask for. I love an older, tried and proven coach as much as the next guy but the ones that repeat success at multiple places just aren't as common as we all hope. Diminishing returns are just as likely. This is going to be fun.
