That is pretty stupid. What does a bear have to do with a Rebel? Why don't they just use a Confederate soldier? That would be like the Longhorns changing their mascot to an eagle and still calling themselves the Longhorns.

Better than a damn tree. Seriously, Stanford? SERIOUSLY?

All this new Ole Miss mascot makes me think of is the movie The Country Bears that my kids love to watch.

BTW, Christopher Walken is magnificent in that film. "Oh no! Country Bear Hall has been torn down!" Standing there in a business shirt, tie, and no pants on...while destroying a table-top replica of Country Bear Hall. LOL.

Walken rules. Ole Miss should have had Christopher Walken as their mascot.

Makes as much sense as Alabama's elephant.
That's what I kind of relate it to. Or Reville is ATM's on field mascot but she's not really an "aggie". At least the American Black Bear is indigenous to Northern Mississippi where Oxford is. I believe they're endangered but supposedly have been starting to grow in population. I never saw one though lol

Colonel Reb was our mascot but they made us stop using him because he was said to have resembled an old plantation owner that wore a confederate uniform. Got rid of the uniform and he wore ole miss shorts and a jersey. The KFC Colonel still wouldn't fly and they banned him.

Laugh at GP... C. Walken for the win!!

Westbury Rebels lost "Johnny Reb" as our mascot many years ago!!

We also had a "live" Johnny Reb!

Removing a "Rebel" is silly, but its got nothing on the foolishness going on in my town.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. -- While some parents and students are gearing up for the first day of school, one Warner Robins man says he's protesting it because he doesn't like the school's mascot.

Pastor Donald Crosby moved to Warner Robins about a year ago and says he wants to get rid of the demon mascot of Warner Robins High School.

"A demon never has a good connotation. Never," says Crosby. "If you look it up in Webster's Dictionary, there's nothing good about a demon."

He is pastor of Kingdom Builders Church of Jesus Christ.

Crosby says he was furious when he found out his ninth-grade son is a future "demon." He's been collecting signatures of protest ever since and has about a thousand signatures on his petition, many from his church and from the internet where he posted an online petition.

He says a pitchfork-wielding mascot sends the wrong message to teens.

"Hundreds of children gather into one place at one time chanting 'Go Demons.' It's the equivalent of us gathering into a church on Sunday morning and shouting 'Go Jesus' or 'Hallelujah Jesus,'" says Crosby.

Fortunately our school board is telling him to "get bent".

I gotta ask Bill. Was there ever a black "Johnny Reb?" If so I gotta see pics of a brotha in a Confederate Uniform with a huge fro.

I'm not a big fan of the Confederacy nor of Confederate imagery OBVIOUSLY; however, I've no issue with schools like "Robert E. Lee" or "Jefferson Davis" having Rebel mascots. I mean, that just makes sense. Anything else would like kind of silly. I think it would be akin to naming a school after Marine Corps General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, and naming the team the "Dandelions".

mmm...they couldn't get a polar bear?

That's when Al Sharpton would chime in:

"Why must the school mascot be a WHITE bear? A white bear which is deemed as 'cute' and 'cuddly' until it rips someone's face off. etc."

Someone is always going to find a reason to be mad about something even if there is no reason to. I can't help but wonder why they didn't take the old mascot and just dress him in one of those post-bellum white suits like Colonel Sanders used to wear (may he rest in peace.) Hell, everybody LOVES the Colonel!

Not that I recall. That said, and you should remember this, Westbury at one time was very diverse school, rich in culture and academics (my, how times have changed). As far as that flag, you should know that it was designed by Catholic immigrants in honor of Saint Andrew.

My HS QB when at the Academy, leading the nation in rushing yards for a QB:

I agree with Historian Shelby Foote. The flag that many consider the "confederate" flag is actually the flag of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and it's not a bad flag. The fact that it's been adopted by various hate mongers and idiots is the reason many find it objectionable.
Much like the brujaja with the Cowboy fans at the tailgate a few weeks back it only takes a handful of idiots to ruin it for the rest of us. Much like the College Fraternity the Kappa Alpha Order. The look up to Robert E. Lee as a gent and scholar and admire his stance on virtue and respect for women.
Some chapters of KA started wearing Confederate Uniforms to a function they hold called the "Southern Belle Ball" and did so for decades.
The current President of KA has banned Confederate Uniforms at KA functions and pissed off many members. His stance. KA was not founded to glorify the Confederacy or it's ideals. It was founded as a gentlemans fraternity and to that end they chose to admire a man whom they see as the epitome of those virtues. The fact that he had been a civil war general is a moot point.
I read that on KA's web site and for the first time in my life wished I was part of a fraternal order.

I had no problem with the Rebel but the Bear is kind of stupid IMO. Ranks below Stanford's mascot, friggin tree as a mascot, wth? Can't imagine someone in a tree suit running down the football field.

Does anyone else get a wee bit creeped out looking at it? I like Cal, and I like bears, but they seriously couldn't design a better looking bear?!

[QUOTECaptain Thomas and Bill Yopp (Laurens Co., Georgia)
Harold K. Daniel (View posts) Posted: 22 Apr 2004 5:54AM GMT

Classification: Query
Surnames: Yopp
Searching for information on Thomas and Bill Yopp. Thomas was the son of Jeremiah yopp and Bill was a servant to the family. Thoams and Bill were constant companions growing up. When the Civil War started Thomas was elected Captain of the 14th Georgia, Co. H Laurens Co., Georgia) and Bill accompanied him.

Bill was given the nickname "Ten Cent Bill," becausehe shined the shoes of the men in the Regiment and performed other duties for ten cents. He surrendered with the men of the 14th at Appomattox Court House.

After the war Bill moved from Laurens Co (Dublin) to Macon, Ga. He worked as bellboy at Brown House in Macon, a porter in an Albany Hotel in New York, was a servant to a family in California, and was a waiter on railroad dining cars. He served ten years as a porter on the privae car of a railroad president. Then he worked on a Navy collier and at Camp Wheeler. His varied career led him around the United States and the world.

In his later years, Bill returned to Georgia to find his former master Thomas destitute and in poor health. Captain Yopp now over eighty years old was moving into the Confederate Soldiers Home near Atlanta. Bill Yopp visited the home often. The board of trustees voted to allow Bill to stay at the Home for as long as he live. At the death of Captain Yopp, 92, Bill made an address expressing his admiration of the kind and generous dispostion of his old master and the respect of each other.

Bill died on June 3, 1836 and was buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Marietta, Georgia. His former master, Captain Thomas Yopp was also buried there. Bill Yopp was the only black person buried in the cemetery. The state of Georgia provided his gravestone, that reads: Drummer Bill Yopp, Co. H, 14th GA INF CSA

I'm writing a book on the 14th Georgia, Any additional information is greatly appreciated!
