Rams trade to #1 overall

I just heard on NFLNetwork.

I can see the Rams spending the #1 overall on Carson Wentz. It will be very similar to the Oilers taking McNair #3 overall, then getting him ready for when the team moved to Nashville. In this case it will be LA.

Titans get a lot of picks though. They may be the team to beat in a coupleof years.

Titans have traded No 1 pick to LA Rams. The Rams are on the clock.

Rams get No. 1 pick, their 4th and 6th. Titans get Rams' 1, two 2s (43 + 45), 3 and then Rams 1 and 3 next year.

Woah! That's a nice haul for the Titans.
I hate to see a division rival with so much draft ammo.

If the Titans draft well, they could potentially land several impact starters in this year's draft and next year's draft.

I'm jealous of the Titans now. What do the Texans have planned? Pick #22 overall in the first round and what else? Are we staying put at 22 or moving up or down?

Does anyone have that draft pick value chart for FUTURE picks? I'm trying to see if this was fair according to that chart and can't find the value of FUTURE picks.

Tennessee could still move up from 15 and still get a top prospect. Or sit where they are and dominate the 2nd round. Still, I would make that trade if I'm the Rams. Would take a different QB though.

Whoa, big-time move ! Wow just think how much more this would have cost us to move all the way up from 22, so I'm now even more pleased with our free agency move on Osweiler. So who are they taking: so which of the 2 top QBs are they, Wincze or Goff ?
But gotta admit the Titans are incredibly lucky with the QB talent available in these 2 Drafts where they first got their franchise QB and then this windfall of Draft picks.

Future picks usually carry the value of this year's pick minus a round. So if we're talking about the 2nd round 10th pick of next year's draft, it will have the same value as the 10th pick of this year's third round.

It certainly shows how ridiculous the idea was that the Texans could move up to take a QB. I think everyone, everyone, can now agree that signing Osweiler was the correct move for the Texans.

No. We should have targeted Connor Cook. But that's just me.

As far as this trade, yeah... we didn't have the ammo. We'd have been trading high 2018 picks to be in the conversation.

Titans should be able to create an insane amount of depth with all their picks this year and next. Kinda hard to screw that up.

I'm sure we'll still have one person saying it wasn't. They'll reference Clowney in the statement as well.

Why are you so certain their target is Wentz? The Rams are moving to LA and Goff played at Cal and is from Cali.

There was an "if" in that statement.

Take it for what it's worth...

Rams reportedly “targeting” Carson Wentz now that they have top pick
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ing-carson-wentz-now-that-they-have-top-pick/

Now that they own the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Rams can have any quarterback they want.

And they seem to have a preference.

According to Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times, the Rams are “targeting“North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz in making the deal with the Titans for the top pick.

While Cal’s Jared Goff is considered by many a more turn-key player, Wentz may have more potential.

If nothing else, Hollywood loves a good story, and dropping a kid from an FCS school who was born in Bismarck into the middle of the league’s return to Los Angeles will be a good one.

We’ll find out if it’s the right one, but Case Keenum’s hold on that starting job was tenuous anyway.

UPDATE 10:00 a.m. ET: Farmer has followed up by saying Goff is “still heavily in the mix,” and the Rams are “leaning” Wentz.

Not everyone by a long shot.

And the #1 pick was worth 3000 points. There is a huge difference between trading up to #1 overall worth 3000 points versus going after a guy projected as #15 worth 1050 points.

If Carson Wentz (projected #1 - 3000 points) OR Osweiler are your ONLY options AND you won't even consider anything else, then I agree with you though, but only on that caveat.

Not really Lucky to take a mediocre QB and stay a pathetic franchise and continue to have high draft picks for sale.

For those who care, the trade is very close to the draft pick value chart - off by less than 10% with the Rams slightly under paying.

I just calculated 3425 to Tennesse for 3120 to Rams on my chart adjusted for supplemental picks. But that doesn't discount the future picks so the discounted equivalent should be very close to even. ps I always use 16 for future picks since draft order is unknown.

I read somewhere to just use the same numbers from where they picked this year and then it also got into a longwinded explanation saying how complicated the whole "next year value" is and how it has different values to different people.

Using the same #s from this year (I assumed Rams got pick #15 and therefore pick #47 as well) my numbers were 3430 vs 3089. Titans win obvi.

Using the same # next year when the #1 is at issue is ridiculous. Teams rarely stay #1 pick bad. So you just have to guess. Odds are next year they'll be picking somewhere 7-15.

Look at the Texans, 2007 #10, 2015 #16.

I don't have to, you just did it for me but we've already exhausted that conversation....moving on....

Taking into consideration that the Rams got a 2nd rd last year for Bradford that made this trade possible and much cheaper than it now appears.

Jon Robinson, Titans' GM, on NFLN now talking about trade.
Says trade gives Titans draft day "currency" to move up if they want

can it get them a HC? Honestly I dont know if I would move up if I was them, unless someone I absolutely love falls close to you. They can get a lot of solid players out of this deal, they have a young team so keep building for the future

You don't need to look at Titans #1 pick next year because it's not being traded, your just looking at Rams next year and guessing where they will be.

In exchange for the top pick, the Titans receive the Rams’ original first-round pick at 15th overall, two second-rounders (43rd and 45th overall) and a third-round selection (76th). The Titans will also get the Rams’ first- and third-round selections in next year’s draft.

Holy sh!t! Can you say DESPARATION? The Rams were at 15. Now, do some of have an idea what it would have cost to move up from 22?

The Rams are going to regret this more than Washington regrets RG3.

Interesting. Neither of these guys are thought to be in the same category as Mariota & Winston and noteven in Andrew Lucks area code so just imagine the premium those prospects would have commanded so not surprising that there's a slight discount (from Draft value chart) for these two.
So this informs us that the Draft Value Chart numbers are still relevant in a Draft if there's a potential "franchise QB" on the trading bloc.

Fisher made fun of the skins with the coin toss and then they did the same kind of deal.

Never saw that coming. Not to #1

The Rams are going to regret having Jeff Fisher as their HC.

That's a lot of projecting and assumptions for Division 2 QB, don't you think ?
Me, I'm no QB expert, so I dunno ? We shall see ?

Agree or disagree, I was merely responding to the idea that no one thinks Wentz is in the category of Mariota/Winston with an experienced and well respected analyst who thinks he is, and maybe more.

I hope the Possums blow it, as in suck it!

They probably wont.

Their GM seems like a sharp guy.

What could happen though is Mariotta continues his injury prone ways and brings the Tack franchise down with him.

On a side note, has anybody heard about the Tacks ownership status? Maybe Pancakes can chime in since he's closer to the Tacks org than he is to the Texans org.

Fisher went to USC right? Think that might sway him one way or another?

Probably not. USC Cal is a big rivalry but it isn't mean spirited like UT A&M.

Interesting. Neither of these guys are thought to be in the same category as Mariota & Winston and noteven in Andrew Lucks area code...

Grades from NFL.com

Winston 6.70
Mariota 6.27
Wentz 6.53
Goff 6.51

Luck was a 97 on a different scale. Frankly I think Winston's score is too high based on team championships.

Why's that? Last time he had a Div II QB he got them within a yard of winning the Super Bowl.

In 21 yrs as a HC Fisher has only made the playoffs 6 times and the 1 SB you mention. When is the last time a Fisher HC team even made the playoffs including the last Tack yrs and the Ram yrs?

Totally overrated HC. IMHO Very good at kissing butt and smoozing with the NFL Hierarchy though.

Never understood why the trade value draft chart remains germane, since I recollect no updates to the methodology since Johnson and team produced it in the early 90's, and draft value changed immensely with the advent of the salary cap in 94, and subsequent CBAs. Outside of media and fans having a platform for discussion, it is antiquated.

It's not antiquated if teams are still using it and they pretty clearly are.

So, I wonder where the Texans would have to trade up to now to get one of these two "can't miss" QB's since we all know paying Os was a terrible move.

It is antiquated, since it has not changed. Value is dynamic, not static. It would be interesting to see which teams use it, and correlate their success.

Over the last 6-7 years I have continually heard about it being out of date. So I have investigated each year as trades are reported (compared the trades to the chart) and it's still being used by the entire league based on the results.

There are theoretical reasons why it could/should have changed, but they have not materialized in practice.

I'd be surprised (okay, shocked) if Goff and Wentz aren't off the board by pick #3 so I don't think grabbing one of them is doable any longer.
