Who answered the call?
The Jags, Jets and Ravens. They all exposed quality (although salary cap disadvantaged) players in the expansion draft. The result was that the Texans had the opportunity to add higher quality players than ordinarily available in an expansion draft (IMO), players like Glenn, Sharper, Walker, Payne and Coleman. These players helped the Texans to win games early and to mentor younger players on what it takes to win in the NFL ... veteran leadership.
How have those teams done that answered the call?
Jaquars - 3-0
Jets . . - 2-0
Ravens - 2-1
Overall - 7-1, in 2004
I believe that the Jets, Jags and Ravens have been able to go out and participate somewhat in the free agent market since the expansion draft, as a result of the salary cap relief.
My recollection is that the Titans were one of the teams that were in salary cap difficulty at the time of the expansion draft (like the Jags, Jets and Ravens) and yet they didn't 'answer the call'. If I'm correct in my recollection, they weren't able to get salary cap relief out of the expansion draft like the other teams did and again my recollection is that they have been bumping their heads on the salary cap every since and have been forced to let players go in free agency who they would have preferred to keep.
Titans - 1-2 (0-2 in divisional games, at home), in 2004
Obviously, the above doesn't prove anything and of course there have been a great many intervening events since the expansion draft. It does appear though, that the teams that worked with the new expansion team have come out okay.
(I hesitate to mention the expansion draft for fear that it sparks additional comments about the Boselli issue, which some may feel has already been EXHAUSTIVELY discussed in previous postings.)
