The Texans have several restructure candidates. They will need to make some moves if they want to add a significant contract.

Laremy Tunsil (2025 Cap = $28,850,000) - could save $9,922,500 with a conventional restructure or $15,876,000 by adding three void years or signing an extension.

Danielle Hunter (2025 Cap = $23,700,000) - could save $13,308,750 with a conventional restructure or $14,196,000 by adding one more void year or signing an extension. If they do a conventional restructure or add another void year, it would send his cap number over $25M next year.

Tytus Howard (2025 Cap = $23,045,588) - could save $10,757,500 with a conventional restructure or $11,464,000 by adding one more void year or signing an extension.

Nico Collins (2025 Cap = $18,257,355) - could save $8,386,667 with a conventional restructure or $10,064,000 by adding two void years or signing an extension.

Shaq Mason (2025 Cap = $14,599,176) - could save $6,596,250 with a conventional restructure or $7,036,000 by adding one void year or signing an extension.

Dalton Schultz (2025 Cap = $14,000,000) - could save $4,872,500 with a conventional restructure or $7,796,000 by adding three void years or signing an extension.

Azeez Al-Shahir (2025 Cap = $11,529,529) - could save $5,872,500 with a conventional restructure or $6,264,000 by adding one more void year or signing an extension.

Denico Autry (2025 Cap = $10,294,118) - could save $4,830,000 with a conventional restructure or $5,796,000 by adding two more void years or signing an extension.

Joe Mixon (2025 Cap = $9,411,765) - could save $2,872,500 with a conventional restructure or $4,596,000 by adding three void years or signing an extension.

Absolutely none of this should happen. There are too many players some on this list that can be post June 1st cuts or trades that would add approximately 43 million to the salary cap. The players I am referring to I have discussed more than once and do not believe they should be on the team.

Void years should only be used in bringing in free agents or when players such as Derek Stingley being extended would be an example.

Any of the options OP has mentioned will mean letting a younger player with a better ceiling walk when their rookie contract ends.

Texans have some tough decisions to make with Stingley, Will, & CJ all needing huge pay rises on the horizon, if they can find an impact player they like they can sign them to a short term deal in the mean time.

Guys like Howard, Tunsil, Shaq all need to have their cut dates worked in with a succession plan through the draft.

Hunter, Mixon, Autry going to be difficult to keeep around. Adding void years seems a terrible idea! Why snooker yourself at the end of these players’ contracts when you are hoping that 3 of the best young talents at their positions in the league are going to be deserving to reset the market in FA?

We’re entering a phase in team building where a lot of teams blow themselves up. Have to draft well at this point and find value in FA. And be bold in moving on from good players who are earning more than you can afford.

This is the point when Nick will earn his money, or come up short after a good effort.

Whoever created this list didn't intend to imply the Texans should restructure all of these deals. He just laid out the deals that could be restructured. Some of these deals will need to be restructured in some fashion. Some of the deals will be terminated. Some of these deals will not be touched (yet). I think that's how you need to look at this list.

Things can be done sure. But it also kicks the can down the road. You're robbing Peter to pay Paul...eventually Paul wants his dough.

I forget to mention that Paul makes pizza.

I guess the landscape of the NFL has changed, not so long ago the only chance you had of winning a Super Bowl unless you were the Patriots was with a rookie contract QB.

What is the difference between what the Chiefs have done that has kept them going to SBs, vs teams like the Bengals/Bills etc who are still in the hunt most years but not quite getting the ring?

I know the Chiefs got rid of their veteran OLmen, have moved on from WRs & CBs.

Bengals gave up Mixon, seems they may have to let Higgins walk, Bills similar with Diggs?

It’s been a thing for a number of years that the best teams didn’t pay top WRs, lots of top CBs seem to move teams a lot.

By contrast, if you have an LT, or top pass rusher that tends to be a position the good teams keep hold of.

I don’t understand why you’d start moving dead money 2-3 years into the future right now, though, when you know you have some great young talent who will demand big contracts at that point.

Would you really want to lose Will Anderson because Hunter is owed dead money on a void year? What do you stand to gain, a year or 2 rental on a Cupp/Higgins level WR across from Nico?

Better off starting to draft to a succession plan and hoping to be good at that, they’ve been on the same page and drafted well since Caserio has been working with Ryans.

Wait a minute, haven't been paying attention. So we are back to having cap issues?

Didn't they just clean up some stuff and now we broke again?

I think I have figured out the salary cap issue. Looking at Stefon Diggs contract that was restructured last year, there is a ~16 million dollar amount that was spread over four void years at 4 million approximately each ; similar to a signing bonus. The purpose was to allow the Texans to use Diggs for 2024 at a cheap contract cap hit. For accounting purposes the entire 16 million is listed against the 2025 cap. As of June 1st this year, a post June 1st cut can be done that allows that 16 million to be spread out as intended over 4 years. It seems that this allows Houston time to either renegotiate or allow him to go elsewhere. If I am correct, once he is cut or extended that amount will be addressed and taken off the accounting books. So in theory we still have that amount of space that eventually can be used. ~ $4 m dead next 4 seasons unless extension.

Exactly. It just means we have options if the right player should come available. Also, Sting's new contract will kick in after next year, but CJ & Will's new contracts won't kick in until 2027. By then, I would expect Mason to be gone & wouldn't be surprised to see Tunsil traded, by then as well. Since most of the other players are still young & productive, extending their contracts would keep them around & give the team some much needed breathing room. Or at least, that's what I think.

We don’t exactly have cap issues, we have brought in some big ticket guys off other teams (FA & trade & resign) Hunter, Autry, Azeez, Diggs, Mixon, Mason.

They fixed the talent issue they had, a couple of these guys didn’t live up to their contract due to inury, suspension, underperformance, but overall they did well fixing this team.

The issue is that any team with a rookie contract QB is on borrowed time with the draft, it’s not that they are in cap hell, it’s that the cap is a factor given the level of talent, the forward planning required to retain young talent, and the fact we fell short of challenging for a championship.

I think Pitre & Ward both injured and Christian Harris not quite back to the level was terrible luck that was a big part of the issue on D when it came to matching up with Kelce.

Diggs injury was unfortunate, Slowick wasn’t exactly weaving magic before he went out though. They fixed the coaching issue.

Mason dropped off a cliff with coaching and the shuffling around him. They seem aware they need to fix the OL

The debate is about whether you open up cap space to sign more big talent by adding void years via restructure. Or do you go the cheaper option and build through the draft.

My preference is to build through the draft and spend now on cutting the likes of Mason & Howard who underperformed, eat that dead money and replace with our young players already rostered who outperformed them, enjoy the cap benefits in future years,

Do you trust Diggs to come back strong off an ACL? I’d be tempted to move on and get someone else in. But FA WRs are expensive and who would be available on a 1 year rental while we develop a draftee and see how Tank recovers?

Robinson and Atwell are FA WR's that shouldn't be that expensive and know the system. Then you have young guys that should be cheap that are talented but haven't really gotten their chance to shine. (Moore/Melton/Wallace etc...) I'm thinking I would like Caserio to sign at least 2 of these guys, sign a cheap FA CB like Isiah Rodgers and spend the rest of the draft capital on the OL/Defense.

Texans need to hit on those late round picks this year. Too many misses with those extra picks this year. Harris and Henderson are already onto new teams. Solomon Byrd might become a rotational guy this year depending on if the team keeps Barnett. Hill barely played and was the only one of the last five picks to make the active roster.

That being said, i’m very happy with the first four picks outlook. Particularly Lassiter/Bullock.

I’d like to see Jawhar Jordan get a better look this year. Hill strikes me as a core ST guy, but who knows…with some hard work, he might eventually work his way into the regular rotation. He’s another guy I have my eye on. The last two picks - shots on the dartboard. Henderson was the guy I just saw as a wasted pick. He didn’t strike me as a player that has a legit shot to stick at guarda…and being a guard he isn’t making it on ST alone either.

  • The Houston Texans could clear $22 million in cap space by restructuring WR Nico Collins and DE Danielle Hunter‘s contract this offseason, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, who points out those contracts are designed to be restructured.
  • In addition, the team could save $10 million by restructuring RT Tytus Howard‘s deal and nearly as much by restructuring LT Laremy Tunsil‘s deal, per Graziano. These cap savings could be used to bolster the offensive line in free agency and also free up much-needed cap space for an extension for CB Derek Stingley.
