My Texans Prospects at Each Position

My Texans Prospects at Each Position:

As we’re coming up to the draft I like to develop a list of guys that I’d love to see in a Texans uniform.

QB: Since we have Mills as a backup, I don’t really see QB as a need for us in the draft. Although I could see them using a day 3 pick to draft a guy to take Mills place after next season. Here are some guys that I could see being a good backup for CJ.

Kurtis Rouke Indiana
Max Brosmer Minnesota
Brady Cook Missouri

RB: I’d love to add to our RB room. These are a variety of day 2-3 guys that I’d be happy with.
Cam Skattebo Arizona
Kaleb Johnson Iowa
Dylan Sampson Tennessee
Devin Neal Kansas
Kyle Monangai Rutgers
Brashard Smith SMU

Sleeper: Lan Larison UC-Davis

WR: we need a WR 2, but unfortunately it’s not a super deep class. I don’t see Nick forcing it if one of their guys doesn’t fall to them.

Emeka Egbuka OSU
Jaylin Noel ISU
Jayden Higgins ISU
Jack Bech TCU
Kyle Williams WSU
Xavier Restrepo Miami (he wins with quickness and IQ; I’d be willing to draft him day 3 and trust the tape)

Sleeper: Konata Mumpfield Pitt

TE: While we already have 3 TEs in the room, I could see the Texans taking advantage of a stacked TE class.

Colston Loveland Michigan
Mason Taylor LSU
Jackson Hawes GT
Terrance Ferguson Oregon
Thomas Fidone Nebraska

Sleeper: Luke Lachey Iowa (if he could get back to pre injury form, he’d be a good addition to the room)

OT: We could draft our LT of the future this year, or we could add depth to the room. These are the guys I like.

Kelvin Banks Jr Texas
Charles Grant William & Mary
Josh Conerly Jr Oregon

OG: This is our #1 need. Need to keep CJ upright. I can see us potentially drafting 2 offensive linemen, but the major need is the interior.

Grey Zabel NDSU
Tate Ratledge Georgia
Donavan Jackson OSU
Jonah Savaiinaea Arizona
Miles Frazier LSU

Sleeper: Jackson Slater Sacramento State

Edge: we have our edge duo in Anderson and Hunter, but I could see us drafting a guy to bring in as a rotational piece that could eventually become a starter after Hunter.

Nic Scourton Texas A&M
Ashton Gillotte Louisville
Barren Sorrell Texas
Ahmed Hassanein Boise State

DT: I see this as our biggest defensive need, but we might not address it until the 3rd round or day 3. Luckily, some guys might get pushed down the board because of the strength of this position.

TJ Sanders SC
Darius Alexander Toledo
Jamaree Caldwell Oregon
Elijah Robert’s SMU
Rylie Mills ND

LB: our LB room is mostly complete. If Harris returns to form, we won’t need to add to the room unless there’s a prospect they really like.

Jack Kiser ND
Teddye Buchanan Cal
Jackson Woodard UNLV

CB: we need to add to the CB room. Our depth is a weakness.

Quincy Riley Louisville
Upton Stout Western Kentucky
Cobee Bryant Kansas
Korie Black OSU

S: this is less of a need since NC traded for CJGJ, but we could still add a guy in the later rounds if we needed for depth.

Hunter Wohler Wisconsin
Rayuan Lane III Navy

Sleeper/UDFA: Tanner Volk Central Washington

Great list. If Caserio doesnt use the top picks on OL, I love Jackson Slater as a later rd pick.

I'm hoping Caserio brought in Maliq Carr at the local day.

Here is where I am: we have 25, 58, 79, and 89 for Quality players in 2025. Plus round 5 and two 7s. I would set round one 2026 aside and not bring it in to a trade package but we also have two round twos , a round three and two round fours that I think Nick could move these in 2025 draft.
I don't care when or how but get the following:
Josh Conerly
Donovan Jackson
Jaden Higgins
Kyle Williams
Charles Grant
Harold Fannin and yes I know I'm the only one that loves this guy.
Damien Martinez RB round 5
Des Watson Nose/Dt in round 7.

You aren’t getting all those pieces BB. They would need to trade up to get that list…multiple times using a lot of current and future picks.

I took a deep dive yesterday at WR and spent quite some time looking at film cutups and reading u- on these guys… and came up with 3 tiers or groupings. We have to come out of this draft with one of these guys. You’ll notice some guys missing
Like Burden and McMillian. That’s because I would not draft them. They are off my board.

Tier 1
Golden
Egbuka

Would have to be at 25 most likely. Golden has a slight edge due to speed, but either guy would be a great fit. Egbuka is probably a better fit at slot but can play outside until that position opens up. After watching a lot of cut-ups, he went up on my list. He’s damn good in his own right, but you can’t teach speed and Golden is the total package and is good enough to be a #1 so he is my top WR.

Tier 2
Kyle Williams
Higgins
Noel

Round 2 prospects. I have Williams first in this group and 3rd favorite overall. He’s not far behind Golden imho. Higgins sort of a Hopkins type. Noel is a shifty slot. I like him, but I really see him as slot only, which means our newly signed slot, would become an outside guy. I’d prefer to keep him in the slot.

Tier 3
Jaylon Royals
Jack Bech
Tre Harris

I really could put any of these names into a hat and shake it up. I have all three really close, but I feel Royals, Bech and Harris in that order is best. Mostl likely still 2nd…possibly 3rd round.

Any of these guys would be a huge plus for this offense. I trust Nick on WR, so whatever choice he makes…I’m onboard. But these are my 8 favorites. Let’s go get one.

I like all of your guys, but I’m not sure Golden will make it to our pick. He’s gaining a lot of steam to go to the cowboys at 12.

Similar list to you, but i’d slot Bech in tier 2 over Noel due to inside/outside versatility. And I have Higgins top of tier 2. Actually… have Golden in tier 2 along with them. Egbuka my only tier 1 on that list.

Like you, not interested in Burden or Mcmillan.

Good point on Bech. I’m a little worried that Higgins can’t separate very well. Poor man’s Hopkins imho. I’ve heard Meco say he favors guys at WR who can separate. Plus I didn’t see him really running over anyone. Hid like to see more bully ball from him.

With that said, while I like Higgins, I think he is a bit of a long shot here.

Agreed. I think Higgins is more Nico than Hopkins tools-wise. The separation on short/intermediate routes is what is holding him out of round one for me right now but I think he has the tools to get there like Nico.

Add Troy Horton to Tier 3 and remove Tre Harris (to slow)

I’d take all of Tet or Burden over Egbuka and especially Golden

Watch the 23 tape on Burden and you will see someone who gets open with ease and is a threat to score whenever he has the ball in his hand. Mizzou’s offense went full stupid in 24, and thats not Burden’s fault.

I worry about Burden's route tree and his game reminds me somewhat of Rondale Moore's. There's value in that but I worry about Burden facing injury issues like Morre has. No doubt though Burden is a weapon. Not one that I would risk 1-25 on though.

Passing on safety/center class, although Zabel is top rated Center. Revel/Porter, big corners, can play safety.

Sleeper picks, are surprise first rounders. Jayden Higgins WR (Ironman compared to Nico) like him more than Golden. Landon Jackson is the smarmiest of the swarm. This would be DeMeco Draft Crush, Maxx Crosby vibes. Mason Taylor in first? Kittle mold, complete, blue collar, despite pedigree, all team player who can do it all. All three would represent Texan culture. All three could be trade down targets 😉

There are also character concerns. He’s off my list, but who knows if the braintrust has him high on their board.

What character concerns? Do you mean the ones raised by a singular anonymous scout?

I'll take his coaches word over scouts who don't want to be named.

Addressing these murmurs head-on, Drinkwitz was clear: “There are these quiet critics out here who say he has a character problem. But let me tell you, he’s been an exemplary player.

No arrests, no public incidents—nothing but a fantastic teammate.” These words came during an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show,” where Drinkwitz also pointed out Burden’s absence from the typical off-field noise that can sometimes accompany star athletes.

Speculative concerns haven’t just stopped with Burden himself. Other reports, like those from Bob McGinn for GoLong, paint a picture where scouts speculate Burden’s family dynamics could be problematic, with some suggesting that he might have been “coddled.”

Yet, Drinkwitz counters this narrative with personal anecdotes, indicating Burden’s maturity and team-first mentality. “Never once did he come to renegotiate his NIL.

He always trusted our judgment, never pushed to be the highest-paid.”

Even after a stellar 2023 season that saw him earn Second-team All-American honors, Burden didn’t rush to the negotiating table for a raise—a move Drinkwitz describes as the young star giving Missouri a “blank check.” Despite the accolades, Burden remained one of the most grounded and loyal figures in the program.

Man, he certainly sounds like someone who want to keep away from your team

I don't agree with the noise surrounding Burden, but I am going to need an explanation as to why your dropping Tet as well

In regards to the 2024 tape, that's a product of Mizzou's horrible offense then Burden's ability. A receiver with Burden's ability to make guys miss has the potential to be a great route runner

Maybe in the wider draft, but I'd rather the Texans take OL over WR in round 1.

Also someone will take Golden earlier than I would ever dream of because that's what happens when you run sub 4.3
Golden is very good though. He's as dangerous as any player in this draft with the ball in his hands and is a good route runner. He's got good but not top tier hands. I see him as a Jaylen Waddle type guy.

It is easy to say what we would do but more difficult of course to predict what Caserio will do.

Give me Zabel and Ratledge in rds 1-2 and Royals/Ferguson in rd 3 and the offense will be much better. I also would trade up into rd 4 and pick the best RB I could find. The offense would look so much better if this was to happen. Only thing is you would miss out on some good DT/CB talent. But after seeing last yrs offense this is the way that I would go.

LT Robinson/Brown/Howard
LG Zabel/Howard/Tomlinson
C Patterson/Zabel/ Scruggs
RG Ratledge/Tomilinson/Ingram
RT Howard/Fisher/Brown.

Depth toughness smarts and intelligence on the OL unlike last yr and I bet you at the end of camp you could trade one or two of these guys to an OL needy team for say a vet Darby type CB.

QB Stroud/Mills
RB's Mixon/Pierce/Jarquez Hunter/Dare
TE's Schultz/Ferguson/Stover/Jordan
WR's Nico/Kirk/Royals/Metchie/ Watson/Berrios/ UDFA Sammy Brown Jr.

Defense

DE Hunter/WA/Barnett/Horton/Autry
DT Settle/Rankins/Fuskasi (SP?) Edwards/Hinish
LB's Harris/Al Shaair/Speed/Hansen/Last yrs late rd guy UDFA etc... ST's guy.
CB Stingley/Lassiter/Darby/Late rd developmental guy
Slot Petrie/Ward
S CJG Jr./ Bullock/Ward/Stewart/Yeast

I think you can win a SB with this squad if the team stays fairly healthy.

Great mock post.

This exercise, makes a strong case for Texans to trade down, rather than slightly reaching, for need. Extra pick could add a key component on the defense while still hammering offensive weapons.

I'm totally on board with trading down if Banks/Zabel/Jackson/Loveland aren't there. I might be willing to trade down anyways. I'm that high on Ratledge. I watched some of his tape and that guys a stud. He's smart, strong and plays with a nasty attitude this OL is missing. Even if you missed out on the 1st group of OL, the 2nd grouping of Ratledge/ Booker/Milum/Belton/Nelson and Logan Brown are pretty darned good.

I posted the following in another thread and I'm not much on Walter's football.com but here's recent mock:
I find it interesting that Walter has Conerly at 25 and Golden at 26. Also Donovan Jackson at 50. Treveyon Henderson and Judkins right behind.

Interestingly from 58 up to 50 is only 80 points. 79 and 89 gets you round 2.56.

Colston Loveland Michigan
Mason Taylor LSU
Jackson Hawes GT
Terrance Ferguson Oregon
Thomas Fidone Nebraska

Sleeper: Luke Lachey Iowa (if he could get back to pre injury form, he’d be a good addition to the room)

OT: We could draft our LT of the future this year, or we could add depth to the room. These are the guys I like.

Kelvin Banks Jr Texas
Charles Grant William & Mary
Josh Conerly Jr Oregon

OG: This is our #1 need. Need to keep CJ upright. I can see us potentially drafting 2 offensive linemen, but the major need is the interior.

Grey Zabel NDSU
Tate Ratledge Georgia
Donavan Jackson OSU
Jonah Savaiinaea Arizona
Miles Frazier LSU

Sleeper: Jackson Slater Sacramento State

Edge: we have our edge duo in Anderson and Hunter, but I could see us drafting a guy to bring in as a rotational piece that could eventually become a starter after Hunter.

Nic Scourton Texas A&M
Ashton Gillotte Louisville
Barren Sorrell Texas
Ahmed Hassanein Boise State

DT: I see this as our biggest defensive need, but we might not address it until the 3rd round or day 3. Luckily, some guys might get pushed down the board because of the strength of this position.

TJ Sanders SC
Darius Alexander Toledo
Jamaree Caldwell Oregon
Elijah Robert’s SMU
Rylie Mills ND

LB: our LB room is mostly complete. If Harris returns to form, we won’t need to add to the room unless there’s a prospect they really like.

Jack Kiser ND
Teddye Buchanan Cal
Jackson Woodard UNLV

CB: we need to add to the CB room. Our depth is a weakness.

Quincy Riley Louisville
Upton Stout Western Kentucky
Cobee Bryant Kansas
Korie Black OSU

S: this is less of a need since NC traded for CJGJ, but we could still add a guy in the later rounds if we needed for depth.

Hunter Wohler Wisconsin
Rayuan Lane III Navy

Sleeper/UDFA: Tanner Volk Central Washington
Great post. We are in agreement of a lot of guys on your list

From OURLADS

  • The top four offensive lineman could come off in any order. The surprise of the night is going to be Kelvin Banks Jr. from Texas. There are teams that have him as the top tackle because of the size and experience playing the left side.
Texans, word of advise, don’t chase the chalk.
Would you trade up for him? If so, how high would you go up?

I would give up 1-25 and 2-58 plus a 2026 4th for 1-12.

I'm thinking I can find a WR at 3-79 and a RB or TE at 3-89/5-166. I might even trade down from 3-89 to get a 2025 4th.
I like your thought process. I think we’d be able to trade up to 15 or 16. But with the way the buzz has skyrocketed, there’s talk that he goes top 10.

I don’t want to give up our two 2nds next year.

View him as plug & play LG. LT tbd? Notice several College LT’s project kicking inside to OG. Even top prospect Will Campbell would be a lock down interior guard, nothing prototypical build wise suggest NFL LT. So I’m not hating or banging for Banks.

Just not trading away future draft capital to address OG. See who falls. Daniel Jeremiah in his final mock gave Texans Tyler Booker. That’s fair value & cultural change.
