Welcome to Houston Graham Mertz

We know what Mills is and he obviously can't fill in for a game or two if CJ is out.
That is not the reason for Mertz's pick...................Mills is a competent BU QB, but becomes a FA in 2026 and the Texans won't want to re-up with another $7-8 million for a backup. I don't see Mertz being picked for anything other than a BU QB replacement for Mills.

It’s very interesting that teams didn’t want to take Sanders in a clear backup QB role due to the worry about his father making noise about a controversy.

And also interesting that he was in the media conversation as a top 10 prospect at some point. Even apparently before the combine he was seen as neck and neck with Cam Ward for #1 QB in the class, neither worked out, was that due to interview or due to the media spending time with the teams for the first time pre draft?

Not sure we'll ever know for sure what happened with Shedeur, but I think there's some disagreement even among the media "experts" as to his skill level, from "top prospect" to "he was in a super simple offense." Aside from that, all the pre-draft drama, with Deion threatening to refuse to play if a team he doesn't like drafts him, not going to the combine, the senior bowl, etc. Making a show out of their pro day, reportedly acting entitled and arrogant during the interview process, not even meeting anyone w/o a top 10 pick. Feels like that's enough baggage for him to have slidden that far.

Yeah it was pretty glaring because otherwise he would seem like a perfect pick for a team like the Rams especially when he was available that late.
