Welcome to Houston Woody Marks

I like the player @beerlover turned me on to him. BL was crowing about him, I did some DD, amd liked him.

I think they value his pass catching ability most. This is another effort to add weapons to CJ’s arsenal. Good job on that front.

What sours me on this pick is the bounty to make this trade. The trade is a separate eval form the player. If he is all that and a bag of chips…all will be forgiven. But he needs to hit. And I think he will. Solid B for the player…D+ on the trade.. C overall.

Woody Marks has great vision, great cut back ability, gets to the second level, has sure hands out of the backfield and can pass protect. His flaw is breakaway speed. Once in the secondary, he's easily caught from behind. I think that's acceptable. He's another dangerous weapon for Stroud out of the backfield.

Marks receiving capabilities and statistics are what I find best about him so far. Could be the perfect safety net for Stroud.

Want to fix the protection for CJ? Give him more hot reads and quick passing options. The Texans have added those this offseason.

Caley spent a lot of time on the Patriots staff watching how they used multiple RBs for different roles. Marks profiles as the pass catching back like James White and Shane Vereen. Caserio knows what to look for when acquiring this type of back for an offense from his time in New England.

And speaking or Vereen… he’s in the Houston Texans scouting department now. I think he knows what to look for ;)

Something John Harris brought up that makes a lot of sense. Last season, especially once Diggs went down, our ability to make quick, short passes for easy yards basically disappeared. So far this offseason, we’ve signed Christian Kirk, who excels at those sorts of routes, drafted Jaylin Noel, who is very similarly skilled, and now Woody Marx, an elite receiving back prospect. Not only are we getting more weapons for Stroud, we’re clearly trying to give Stroud options early in the down so that he doesn’t have to just sit back there waiting to see if someone can get open downfield before the pressure reaches him.

A to the men! I am a advocate of the no huddle and the two minute drill offense. Stroud with these wide receivers should be like a lightning bolt with his arm. I guess I should look up some of my older posts about Stroud and wide receivers versus running backs. We now have a pretty good room of running backs and wide receivers. I still don't want to see any 50/50 runs to set up the pass. Stroud is just so accurate with Nico and now the two Iowa State boys should March us down the field like we've never seen before.. pun intended!

CJ Stroud approves this post.

Adding that quick pass ability covers some of the warts on the O-line too, since none of the big studs fell to Houston in the draft and they didn't get significantly better in free agency. If you can't make instant and meaningful upgrades to the line, the next best thing is to take pressure off of the line you've got.

Giving Stroud valid options to get rid of the ball in under 3 seconds is worth adding a pro bowl OL. We’ve seen that in New England for years with these types of backs.

I always remember when the Pats would play the Ravens and just conceded that they weren’t going to run the ball. Brady is going to throw the ball all game and James White or Shane Vereen are gonna catch 10 plus passes.

Super Bowl against Falcons, James White 14 catches 110 yards 2 tds. Also had a rushing td in that game. That’s the ceiling we want from Woody! When a defense takes other options away, you unleash the pass catching back!

Future 3rd down back for whenever Dare leaves the team.

Really really wanted Cam Skattebo who was already gone by then but I can always support this type of team building.

Also didn’t love Nick trading a 3rd next year but sometimes you gotta take the good with the bad with wheeler dealer Nick and I have to say it’s mostly good.

Typical Nick overpaying. Marks is a good player but not worth that future 3rd. I would rather he was drafted where that tiny corner was drafted

Exactly my thoughts as well!

So far, I like all the picks. Jaylin Smith looks like a Demeco player, loves to hit! Woody Marks excellent hands & vision, holds on to the ball. 4.5 speed ok for RB. Smell like SWARM to me.
I like that our two WR choices played for the same school. If they both make the team that familiarity has to be a good thing.

It just matters who would be on the board then next year. Or if Nick uses that pick in a trade

Think it came down to the gap in picks this year. No 4/5 round pick whereas next year they had more evenly spaced picks. They had a need for a pass catching back for this offense and identified Marks as the guy to be their James White or Shane Vereen. I wouldn’t be surprised if Vereen himself pounded the table for him.
