Houston Cougars - Big 12

This would probably make me excited to watch more college football.

I watch the Cougars play, but they were never on tv much before last season.

God I hope this happens.. this would be so huge for this city and the University.. There's a lot of 5 star recruits that come out of this area to play for Power 5 schools.. now we can keep them here.

Would definitely make college football more interesting.

However, until they get a longer playoff college football is still so lame.

From the desk of Lt. Governor Dan Patrick

Re : Big 12 conference expansion

Dear Governor Abbott,

I am writing to request you exert whatever pressure and influence is necessary to ensure that the University of Houston be included in any expansion of the Big 12.

Under the stellar leadership of President Renu Khator, the University of Houston has become one of only three Texas universities to achieve Tier One academic status. It has the second largest on campus student population among all Texas universities. And its athletic programs are well on their way to achieving greatness. The University of Houston opened its new TDECU stadium last year, and has recently committed to major upgrades of its basketball facilities at Hoffienz Pavilion.

The football team, under Head Coach Tom Herman, has just completed a 13 – 1 season, including a Peach Bowl victory over national powerhouse Florida State to give the University of Houston a top ten finish.

Coach Kelvin Sampson’s basketball team has continued to improve, and poised to compete for an NCAA bid this year.

I have served on the engineering advisory board for both the University of Houston, and the University of Texas. I also have two daughters and a son-in-law who graduated from Texas A & M. I am very familiar with all three fine universities. I can objectively say, based on academic excellence and a commitment to athletic excellence, there is no university in the nation, more deserving of inclusion in the Big 12 expansion at this time than the University of Houston.

Please take whatever action is necessary to ensure that that these decisions are made based on what is best for all state supported Texas universities, not just what is in the University of Texas’s sole interest.

You can reach me at xxx-xxx-xxxx if you wish to discuss this matter further.

Sincerely,

Lt. Governor Dan Patrick
P.O. Box 12068,
Austin, TX. 78711

Also, Gov. Abbot tweeted the following message:
Big 12 expansion is a non-starter unless it includes University of Houston

Funny how UH alumni all hate UT. Texas is the main force in the Big XII pushing for this.

BYU and UH would be best case scenario for the conference. Otherwise, they are in trouble. Cincinnati and Memphis are just extra mouths to feed if they have to go that route. They don't add enough value to offset the piece of the pie they'd be getting.

Not funny at all when you consider UT was the main force in keeping UH out when the SWC broke up.

Not funny at all when you consider UT was the main force in keeping UH out when the SWC broke up.

This always comes up but it's a blatant lie.

Texas wanted to go to the PAC. They had a deal to go with Colorado but tried to screw them over and get A&M in over them instead. Colorado then backed out and committed to the Big 8.

A&M wanted to go to the SEC. They've wanted that since that conference was created. They agreed to come to the Big 8 instead because the state agreed to fund the building of their new basketball facility.

The Big 8 wanted to merge with the remaining members of the SWC but UT and A&M blocked it because they were already financially carrying those schools in athletics.

So the Big 8 decided to only take four SWC schools if UT and A&M would commit. They agreed, but only if the new conference would follow a policy of unequal revenue sharing, so that UT and A&M wouldn't have to continue sharing resources that they earned with schools that brought less to the table.

After all of this got out the state legislature got involved. If you want to blame anybody blame Texas Tech and Baylor, because their alumni used their powerful positions in the state government to ensure that their schools got the other two spots. UT and A&M didn't have a choice at that point. As publicly funded schools, they were threatened to have their funding cut if they disagreed to bring Tech and Baylor as the other two schools.

I know this hurts UH fans but the Big 8 never wanted them. They didn't care which two schools came along, as long as UT and A&M came with them.

And yet UT unanimously takes all the heat from UH fans. Never see anybody mention anything about A&M.

Also, at that point in time a 16 team conference for football seemed ridiculous.

That's why they settled on 12. Hell, they tried to go from 12 to 14 shortly after the conference was created and it got voted down by the members.

I was actually surprised that UH wasn't added in 2012. It would have helped the conference maintain its presence in the southeast Texas recruiting/TV viewing area after A&M left.

This may all be a back room deal for UH to drop their objections to UT creating a 4 year institution in Houston.

The more politicians get involved the more I'm inclined to believe that's exactly the case.

UT bought some land in Houston not too long ago. UH can't be happy about that.

I've mostly reserved my anger for Baylor and Ann Richards who (I've always understood) played such a big part in getting Baylor in at what I believe was at the expense of UH but really, I just don't much care anymore. I just want to see UH in a real conference where it should have been from the moment that the SWC closed shop.

At this point in time I don't think there's a reasonable argument for denying them that. Whether there's actually a place for them at someone's table I can't say. I'd be happy to see them in the Big 12. I'd be fine with them anywhere really.

I'm just tired of watching them wander in the desert looking for a home.

I feel like BYU is the most ready Big12 school. After that its a toss up of UH/Cincy/Memphis/Uconn etc. And at the end of the day, UH being backed by poitical power makes me think they are #1 or #2 in line.

So for me if you are adding 2 schools, BYU and UH get the nod. If you are going 4, tack Memphis and Cincy on.

BYU - Appears to have a large fan base, nice facilities, good football team and control over a lot of Utah television sets. Super far away. But brings enough to the table to offset distance maybe.

UH - Political backing, nice facilities, good football team, large TV market, needs to beef up academic standards.

Cincy/Memphis - Give WV nearby rivals.

I am not a big fan if growing down into Florida unless you are getting a big program from the state. I dont think UCF and South Florida move the needle much for me.

Uconn seems too far away. Same with ECU. Tulane seems to small and bad at football.

http://www.cbssports.com/college-fo...-expansion-teams-before-start-of-2016-season/

The Big 12 would prefer to wrap up the expansion process before the start of the 2016 football season, three persons with knowledge of the ongoing process told CBS Sports on Thursday.

While it's not clear whether a final decision on timing has been made, all three sources said the Big 12 doesn't want expansion to overshadow the league's football season with a drawn-out process that would extend into the 2016 campaign.

The Big 12's season kicks off Sept. 2 when Baylor hosts Northwestern State and Kansas State travels to Stanford.

So we could hear something as early as this month.

Also, what do people think about BYU getting an invite? Is their athletic success enough to overcome certain obstacles like distance away, smaller tv market, being another (Baylor, TCU) private religious school.

I think if its two, it will be UH and Cincy, although I would like to see BYU instead of Cincy in if there is only 2 teams added.
If its 4 teams, I think it will be UH, Cincy, BYU and maybe Memphis.

But I won't be shocked if something happens and UH gets screwed again.

Imagine Warren Buffett not buying a stock for his portfolio because it may make too much money. Imagine a Major League Baseball general manager not promoting a player because he could outperform an established one. Imagine a college admissions office not taking a candidate because they might outsmart the other students.

Those scenarios are being bandied around in the Big 12 right now, as the league discusses admitting the University of Houston as an expansion candidate. Only a conference as shortsighted as the Big 12 would consider Houston's vast football potential as an argument against bringing it into the league. Even for a conference long defined by schools ignoring the conference's greater good, the discussion around Houston is stunningly myopic.

I hope UH gets in. I have always pushed for that. I've always been a Horn but UH has always been the other school I support. It would make the Big XII more interesting to me. Not a fan of BYU coming in though. They would just be one of those other schools that would make me go meh when I see them on the schedule (like so many others in the Big XII). That has nothing to do with how good or bad they are. It has to do with not being able to relate to a school in Utah growing up in Texas.

BTW, I don't get offended when someone uses "TU". It just makes the user look a little less educated.

TU comes off more like the person saying it is just saying it wrong. UT sounds like Tennessee to me. To me they're just "Texas" or "The Longhorns".

I have always referred to Texas as UT, however ran into that Tennessee problem when I briefly lived in South Carolina. To everyone there UT is Tennessee (They call Carolina USC which was confusing me also).

Funny story about UT out there. One night I was in bar with my brother and I had a UT (Texas) baseball cap on. Some guy from TN started high fiving me. You would think the burnt orange compared to the creamsicle orange would be obvious, however it wasn't to him.

Once he figured out I was from Texas he starting running down Texas, bragging that Texas was founded by brave men from Tennessee. He started naming them of course. So I just responded "So, what you're telling me is all of the brave men and women from Tennessee left and became Texans, while the cowards stayed behind and remained Tennesseans? Thanks for recognizing that my ancestors were brave souls.".

He actually laughed and bought me a beer. The funny thing is my ancestors left Overton County, TN and settled in central Texas in 1840. They were brave too, however smart enough to wait for the war to end before heading over. ;)

If we don't get in now, I will always consider the Big 12 to be cowards.

I can see both sides for and against. I think logic and reason will be thrown out for maximizing a big 12 tv contract.

If I were a conference like the ACC or maybe even the PAC-12 I would think hard about adding Houston and being able to recruit Texas.

Yeah quit riding on the whole tu thing. It's not like there isn't a sizeable contingent of idiot horns who go around spewing their "poooooor aggy" bs every time they have to bring up any meaningful post-Mack Brown accomplishments.

And btw... not sure you'd find many Aggies wanting to trade for the position Texas is in now.

All that being said, I hope UH gets in. I may never see another A&M-UT game in my life but at least I'll see my grad school give them a whipping for a few more years.

I love it when Aggies talk trash. Aggs had one big time season out of like the last 15 which was all due to Manziel's greatness. Then the very next year they lost like 4 games even with him playing great again. Aggs thought they were going to become big time with the coach they stole from U of H, but that really flopped. Aggs are going to continue to struggle in the SEC even with all this talent they have.

Texas has been pretty weak though I'll admit. As a fan, I'll speak the truth. They got what they deserved by hanging on to Mack for way to long. VY saved his job, and everyone should have seen that. Strong is a great man, and I hoped he would turn out well. However, I don't think he'll become the big time HC he was hired to be and realistically he like their 4th or 5th option. That Longhorn network thing was such a fail, and a horrible precedent for college football all together. Texas really needs to stay out of the way of U of H from getting in the Big 12. COmpetition for that conference is great for college football and especially for the Big 12. The Big 12 sucked as a conference when Texas was dominating, and as fun as it was the majority of the weekly games were boring to watch due to their really only being two dominant teams in the conference.

What Bama has found a way to do year in and year out is nothing short of amazing. I hate Bama, but man he is arguably the best football coach of all time. Saban is GOD in football.

Surely this would improve the UH prospects of being admitted into the Big 12 ?

Everyone knows what its going to come down to.........whether or not UT & OU can get over their butthurt about having to fight that much harder for houston recruits if they let UH in. I don't think it'll affect UT too much...they're as much a brand as USC & Michigan & will always be....plus austin is a great city to attract young guys. OU however stands to be hit big imo just b/c they're the farthest away & Norman, OK.....is well, Norman, OK.

Big 12 meeting has ended. Preliminary tweets are saying no expansion. It is speculated that ESPN was involved in the decision not to expand.

It is not official, but it appears there will be no expansion as rumors the past couple of weeks have indicated.

It is also being reported that no school received the required number of super majority votes.

The Houston Cougars better focus on winning games. It sucks the Big 12 didn't add us, but let's not make it two losses on the season at SMU tonight. A loss tonight and people around the country would just laugh that we even entertained the thought of joining a major conference.

SMU leads 28-7 over Houston and it's almost halftime. Ugh, we may soon have two losses (at Navy, at SMU). After we were ranked #6 in the country, now #13 in the country. With two losses we may become unranked after tonight.

And we still play a solid and highly ranked Louisville team later this season. A loss tonight and we may be looking at three losses, minimum, on the year. Is this a Houston Cougars team that is ready to play with the big boys in a prestigious conference? We beat Oklahoma back in the first game but since then I haven't been too impressed.

We're not battle tested or tough enough. We need to schedule better non-conference opponents. Playing the likes of Lamar from the Southland and Texas State from the Sun Belt - two conferences much weaker than ours - didn't get us ready for the likes of Navy and SMU. And we want to play Big 12 teams week in and week out? Even Tulsa gave us a scare in our house last week.

In the back of mind, I'm wondering if the team is tanking on Herman. Something is not right, there may internal issues with all the distractions,

I hope not but if we lose tonight you may be on to something. They are showing some fight in the second half so far. 28-14 game now. But we're going to need to scrape and claw our way back to a nailbiting win even if we can finish this comeback.

We shouldn't be struggling against the likes of SMU, Tulsa and Navy (lost). Even with two of those games being on the road. We've been heavy favorites in every game.

Heck, we were -23.5 tonight at SMU if I'm not mistaken on the Vegas line. We should be rolling to a four-score victory (24 or more points) and an easy cover. Instead we were down 21 points at halftime and still down 14 points with 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

I should have put down a few grand on SMU +23.5 tonight.
Although I'd have felt sheepish winning money against U of H.

I'm worried that our next head coach is going to be Charlie Strong after the Texas Longhorns fire him. And Texas is going to offer Tom Herman a boat load of money on par with what Alabama is paying Nick Saban (highest-paid coach).

We will basically switch head coaches with Texas.

Maybe Charlie Strong would be better off coaching in the American Athletic Conference again. He had some great success at Louisville in this same conference back in 2013 when Teddy Bridgewater was the quarterback there. They had finished 12-1, #15 in the country and they blew out the Miami Hurricanes in their bowl game, 36-9.

That was right before Louisville had moved on to the ACC, they were successful upgrading conferences unlike us, where they have become one of the best teams in the country. But Charlie Strong is a heck of a coach but unfortunately it hasn't worked out for him in Texas.

I could see us chasing Charlie Strong once we lose Herman.

SMU now leads 31-17 early in the fourth quarter.
Unbelievable. Houston was -23.5 and heavily favored!

I'm speechless. Tom Herman may as well pack his bags.
He didn't even receive his $5 million bonus. Sorry, Tom.
Good luck with the Texas Longhorns in the future.

I'll be okay with Charlie Strong I guess. Hopefully. LOL

Our o-line is decimated by injuries. But I'm getting the feeling that this team is quitting on Herman to send him a message. I'm probably wrong but something is up, I know this team, something is going on.

You think the players are laying down because of rumors that Herman has no control over?

What a joke! We miss a 19-yard field goal after a 50-yard pass that got us 1st and goal inside the 5 yard line. We got stuffed on three straight running plays then miss a chip shot.

Still down 31-14 with 10 minutes left.

We just cost ourselves a big 3 points.
We could have gotten it down to two scores.

LOL, we were favored by 23.5 points though!
I'm pissed off right now guys. I'm trying to laugh to feel better.

This kicker we have. My goodness. He's been bad lately.
Ty Cummings. He has to make that 19-yard field goal!

I could have made a 19-yard field goal.

I'm just saying something does not look right about this team. They are playing with the same intensity in CUSA Championship game against Southern Miss a few years ago, under similar distractions.

This sentence says the same thing twice and is redundant.
I'm upset and not even thinking!

No Big 12. Horrible losses to bad teams.
We may end up with 3 or 4 losses this year.
#13 ranked going into tonight. Should be unranked now.
Adios Tom Herman. Say hello to Charlie Strong.

I posted that on my Twitter account just now.
I'm better off just posting shorter content.

And Herman could have control by publicly stating that he is staying at UH to end any suspicions the players might have.

I just hate when rumors like that creep up. They started even before the Navy game. I wish we could have just stayed focused and remained undefeated. Now we're spiraling out of control. 3 or 4 losses is likely now. We still have Louisville looming and we'll probably lose to UCF or Memphis. Possibly both which would give us 5 losses this year.
