Chargers plan to announce move from San Diego to Los Angeles

Per Adam Schefter:
Almost one year to the day that the Rams moved to Los Angeles, the San Diego Chargers now likely are planning to do the same.

The Chargers plan to announce as early as Thursday that they are moving to Los Angeles, ending a 55-year stint with San Diego and returning to their birthplace, league sources said.

The Chargers played their inaugural season in Los Angeles in 1960 before moving to San Diego in 1961.

The Chargers have notified NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and other league owners, of their intent to move to Los Angeles for the 2017 season, sources said.

Bananas. Not the most surprising bananas, but nonetheless

So where do they play until the new stadium is finished Anaheim or the Rose Bowl.

from the article...
The Chargers have not announced where they will play home games in the interim the next two seasons. A possible, if not likely destination, next year is the StubHub Center in Carson, California, where the MLS' Los Angeles Galaxy play. The stadium holds about 27,000 and could be expanded by 3,000 to 30,000.

Just from the few articles I have read on this it seems like the Chargers don't think they can win a vote for a new stadium in San Diego.

The league isn't too keen on putting another team in Los Angeles because the ratings and attendance for the Rams weren't as good as they had hoped for this season.

It seems this is far from a done deal and yahoo is reporting the NFL wants to try to find a way to make it work in San Diego.

This might be like the Oilers were here where the fans hate the owner so much they would never vote to give him a new stadium.

I'm thinking LA Smugs

yeah I've read a bunch of these

I was curious if there were any actual ideas about a serious name

the only interesting name I've heard is "LA Sharks" and even that was just a joke hoping for jets vs sharks.

I still think that it could be a cool name, possibly with grey-electric blue colors

I heard they plan to rebrand

any ideas what they might go for?

The Los Angeles Second Bananas

The Los Angeles Third Wheels

The Los Angeles Unwanted Birth

The Los Angeles Menage A Trois

I'd rather have a team in a market where the fan base is a little less apathetic that LA. Just stick with the lousy stadium with solid fan attendance than have a fancy stadium that is half empty.

Why bother to rebrand? They started their existence as the Los Angeles Chargers and now they're going back to it. Maybe they're going to keep the name but reorient on the Charger as a horse angle?

the rebrand thing is something I read, in the article it looked like the rebrand was considered the best way to go (from the chargers owner or whoever it was) if the move to LA was confirmed

Why would any team want to go to LA?..LA doesnt give a **** about football, NFL wants that market even if it is a "bad" market.
But you now possibly split the town for 2 teams.

I feel for the fans for San Diego.

Makes me think about the john oliver piece on stadiums...crock of ****

Really hard to understand this move. L.A's history with supporting franchises is terrible. Just another team that will dominate headlines whether they're good or bad because they're in L.A. Now that the Rams are there, I just don't see this working out to well for either team unless they hit a jackpot and land an elite QB that makes one of those teams great year after year. A non passionate fan base to support two teams just doesn't seem all that likely to work. I see one of them leaving in 10 to 15 years.

New logo is "BLAND" to the max and just not very good. I bet they change it before the actual move takes place.

in that case then call them the Los Angeles Chargers of San Diego.

Both the Rams and now Chargers are in very tough divisions. What happens when both teams suck and the bandwagon L.A. fans fail to support either team? What will the NFL do when they are both in financial trouble within a decade?

The NFL is finally getting what it wants with their heavily coveted L.A. market. I hope it bites them in the ass. This just reeks of Goodell's and his masters' endless greed.

This has Goodell written all over it and it will likely backfire. Both teams are going to struggle to stay competitive (Rams are a mess; Chargers will be a mess once Rivers retires) and LA does not root for losers.

But why??? LA could give a flip about football & short of either of these teams developing a dynasty in the next 5 years, there are going to be tarps on the upper deck seats like Jacksonville in a few years.

They should have moved them to San Antonio, but Jerry and McNair would do everything in their power to block that move.

So La La Land, which doesn't give half a fart about NFL football, gets two teams while San Antonio continues to toil in the wilderness. This is horse ****.

As a central Texan, and I emphasize "Texan," screw San Antonio. If that happened I'd only see the Texans from a sports bar. No sir, count me out of wanting to see that. Besides, I still don't like that they tried to steal the Saints from N.O. after Katrina.

They should have moved them to San Antonio, but Jerry and McNair would do everything in their power to block that move.

Then go Bob and Jerry!

So here is their new logo. Looks like they took the Dodgers logo and italicized it. This is bad.

Yeah, apparently twitter has blown up over dissatisfaction with the logo. I don't follow twitter but I'm guessing the Dodgers fans are the most upset.

Man, that made my stomach churn.

What's it going to take for people to stop supporting this crap? Are we so dumb that we're willing to pay to be robbed by the NFL?

Thankfully, I don't have a franchise much worth rooting for, so it's made it a bit easier for me to slowly care less and less about professional football.

That's gonna be embarrassing when they fail to sell out that dinky little 27K seat stadium, and there will come a time when they don't. Folks out there just don't support football
like real fans do.

But they, nor does the NFL, care (see link in post #26). Millions have been made no matter if butts are in the seats or not.

After reading that article I believe the NHL has just supplanted the NFL for #2 on my lists of favorite sports. It was probably second all along, but that did it.

We could push to make the NFL pay taxes, which they currently don't, but Goodell would probably wage a war on fans unlike anything we've seen if that happened.

I'm a lifelong Dodgers fan (though I have no ties to LA). The Clippers did the same thing with their uniform enhancements, making them more "Dodgersesque". It doesn't bother me personally. I thought it was kinda cool. It just shows which franchise owns the city.

The Dallas Mavericks also modified their uniforms in the direction of the Cowboys. I'm surprised the Stars haven't done it yet especially considering their name.

The teams in Pittsburgh all have the colors which I think is cool.

The problem I have with the Chargers doing this is that they are carpetbagging into LA and immediately trying to piggyback off the team that owns the city. If they were already a long time established team in LA it would be different. Even if the Rams did it, it would probably go over better because they have long history with LA.

This also means that Phillip Rivers will want out badly. He was making threats about acting up two years ago if they went to Los Angeles. Unfortunately we can't pay him and Oz.

Yeah, the guy who signed an extension after making those threats you mentioned (knowing full well nothing had changed about the Chargers prospects of moving to LA) doesn't really sound like he's going to act up in response to the move.

“But at the same time – and I hope that people will understand this: I have to get excited and fired up about going up to a new area and representing our team, our organization and going and trying to, shoot, win as many games as we can win and be the same guy that I’ve always been. That’s the only way I know.

Given how difficult it is to find an adequate starting NFL QB - much less top 10 and arguably top 5 - Philip Rivers won't be playing any place other than LA anytime soon.

Dear Chargers,
we won't move you to los angeles.

Love,
Your Local San Diego Moving Companies

We decree, henceforth, that we shall unite as a perfect union of professional movers in agreeance to not aid the San Diego Chargers' move to Los Angeles. The following companies join us in this protest:

This is good news for the one company that cares about business more than football, since they can ask for more money to do the job

Indeed. Everybody wins. Chargers get moved eventually. All these other teams get to feel good about sticking to their principles and sticking it to the Chargers on their way out the door, and the one company that does it (probably from LA) gets the work and the rewards.

The guy sitting next to me at the game was from LA and I asked him his thoughts about LA gaining two teams. I was surprised when he told me the Charges would be playing in a 27K seat soccer stadium. I had not read much about the move and was really surprised they would be playing in a stadium so small. I guess when I feel like checking on the path forward, how many new stadiums and when, cost, etc., I will gain a better understanding the benefit of moving now.

Least shocking news ever: Report says owners discussing Chargers' viability in L.A.

Frank Schwab

Yahoo SportsOctober 17, 2018, 12:39 PM CDT

Everyone knew the Chargers moving to Los Angeles was a bad idea, except the Chargers and the NFL, apparently.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Seth Wickersham reported that owners have discussed the Chargers’ viability in Los Angeles. This is just the Chargers’ second season in L.A. and it’s already going bad. The team hasn’t been able to sell personal seat licenses. If there’s one surprising part of the report, it’s that the team has already changed its revenue goals for when it moves to Inglewood, from $400 million to about $150 million. That’s a massive cut. NFL business is booming, and the Chargers are planning to settle for less than 40 percent of their expected revenue. They won’t even be moving to the new Inglewood stadium with the Rams until 2020.

The Chargers struggling in Los Angeles is quite predictable, for many reasons. When NFL owners and executives are talking amongst themselves about whether the Chargers can make it in L.A., hopefully they’ll also wonder how the league could have allowed such a bad idea to happen.

Lot of red flags surrounded Chargers move

What about a relocation to San Antonio?
The San Antonio Chargers...
Or would three NFL teams in Texas be too much?

San Antonio, Austin and everything in between could easily support an NFL Franchise.....not to mention, the land is there for the taking to build one heck of a stadium.

If San Antonio could land an NFL team, I'd quickly turn my focus towards the Rays or Marlins and try to land an MLB team as well.

The space is there to have two stadiums in one area and make it pretty spectacular. I visited Detroit and saw how Ford Stadium and Comerica Park shared the same space and it was rather awesome.....I think San Antonio could easily do something very similar only on a far grander scale.
