Not just down field, but also outside the numbers. I'm really hoping he plays more loose and free as he gets more experience. He threw the ball where the play was designed to go. Meanwhile, he had the TE open in the middle of the field several times.1st game of the season…new offense…so i’ll give him a slight pass…but he has to get better throwing it downfield and sensing pressure.
Which QBs played well this weekend, & which didn't?
Of course Mahomes was balling. Cousins had a good game. Herbert had a good game. Jameis had a good game.
Anyone else?
Rodgers had a bad game.

Just adding this for reference. I didn't watch most of these guys & don't think passer rating means they played well.
I didn't see happy feet.Mills made good throws but he also made bad throws and decisions. He had happy feet quite a few times. He needs to continue to grow and become more confident.

Most of those guys have played in their offenses for more than 1 yr and all of them were starting more than their 12th game. Also all of those QBs have better weapons to work with.Allen, Mahomes, Cousins, Herbert and Tua all played well. Wentz started strong but fell back to earth late... Jones, Tanny & Winston, game managers who didn't really play any better than Mills did.

Still, all of these are veterans. Of the young qb's, Mills had the higher passer rating and Lawrence had a slightly higher qbr. Personally, I'm of the opinion that qb's with less than a years experience will not normally play on the same level as experienced veterans.Which QBs played well this weekend, & which didn't?

Excellant post. With a clean pocket he was fine for the most part..those darts he threw to OJ Howard...the dart he threw to Chris Moore that drew a PI that set up Howard's 1st TD...Nico's 1st catch in a tight window...he had a clean pocket & he had no issues with pulling the trigger & his accuracy on those throws downfield. The issues arose throwing it down the field and outside the numbers when he had people at his feet and/or pressure on his shoulder..& when Indy stopped giving him his concrete reads he looked indecisivive.... unsure when he should manuver around in the pocket or stay....when to move off his downfield read and when to just check it down.
See fans don't understand offenses depend on mismatches and undisciplined defensive play...... quite a bit. So often times when you're learning a new offense as a young qb, your reads are presented to you as concrete...i.e. "if the safety goes here, you look for this here backside/underneath.." Problem is, alot of times as a qb you don't get that concrete/definitive read for 1 reason or another. & what happens with young qbs is they tend to get stuck in no man's land.... read wise...& that's what i think happened to Mills in the 4th and OT........ alot..
Defensively the Colts started obscuring his reads by not being too quick to commit &/or jumping the underneath stuff..They started playing more disciplined. The best in the game tend to be able to manipulate defenses with their eyes and know when to come off reads. Clearly Mills in this new offense still has a ways to go in that department.
I hear you. But my thinking & the reason I asked, after watching highlights last night, not many QBs actually played well. Most played well enough, like Mills.Mills finished #12 after Week 1.....forgot 2 games left tonight. Good news....#7 Tannehill lost, #11 Murray lost, and #12 Mills tied. 21 QB's finished behind Mills. McSorely (Cardinals) and Rush (Cowboys) got tie under center. Rush will be the starter unless Cowboys convince the 49'ers to part with Garoppolo.....which 49'ers may be hesitant to do after Trey laid an egg.
Good thing we don't have Joe Burrow playing for the Texans... hate to hear how scathing your comments would be after his 4 ints yesterdayMills needs a one-way ticket to benchville next year. Fortunately, I think the Texans brass understands this and knows you're never winning squat with Mills. They will let the kid die by his own self-inflicted wounds, and then they will go out and get their guy in the same way that RS brought in DW4.
No feel for the game, poor intangibles, isn't a natural leader, never makes an off-schedule play, can't create anything on his own, underthrows every single deep ball, can't play outside the numbers either run or pass, can't scramble, isn't self-aware, doesn't feel the rush, arm is average/ok, has no escapability...need I go on?
What does he do well? He does well with everyone in tune, lock-step, no major breakdowns, and you're inside the numbers. On those occasions, he's made some nice passes. The two to Howard yesterday were spot on and beautifully thrown.
The kid has a place in the league, but it's not as a long-term starter for anyone. And as a 3rd pick, he's really exactly what you expect. He doesn't get any respect as a clear number 1 because he's not that guy. Quit elevating a JAG because he wears deep steel blue. If he was on another team, we'd all feel sorry for their fans having to watch that nonsense every week. He's a lot better than Savage or some of the other trash that's come through Kirby but he's not good enough to be the LT starter for this or any other NFL team.
Going by the traditional stat line, Davis Mills was the best of the sophomore starters: The 2021 third-round pick completed 62 percent of his passes for 240 yards and a pair of touchdowns with no interceptions. But if you want to remain optimistic about his prospects, do not watch the film of Houston’s 20-20 tie with the Colts. Mills’s accuracy was wildly erratic, and his best plays came on wide-open throws into Gus Bradley’s defense. The ball placement on Mills’s longest completion of the day probably cost Houston four points, as he badly underthew a wide-open Brandin Cooks, wasting a perfectly good flea-flicker.
Mills finished the day with 98.9 passer rating, but his minus-0.09 EPA per dropback ranked 20th among Week 1 starters, per TruMedia. And he was especially bad without the help of play-action, averaging minus-0.16 EPA per play on standard dropbacks. That kind of performance may have been passable when Mills was seen as an overachieving rookie, but with heightened expectations, Houston will need more from the 23-year-old in order to make a long-term commitment to him.

Mills may not be the guy...but literally everything you listed there you are wrong about & Mills has shown flashes that he can do all that. hell in this game alone he showed most of that.
But carry on...
They key to your statement is that he can do all that, but ultimately the question is can he do it consistently enough to build on?
He's young and inexperienced so needs the benefit of the doubt for now. I do question if Pep is the OC that could get him to that next level or not.

Nah man, just nah. I disagree completely, it's too early IMO to make such hardline definitive statements. This sounds like you have a grudge against the guy.
Where’s the lie though? Are we supposed to pretend that Davis Mills, a third rounder, did not outplay Trey Lance and Matt Ryan yesterday? Cause he did. Not saying Mills is the answer by any means, just stating facts for Week 1.The best thing we can say about Davis Mills right now is, "At least we didn't spend a 1st round pick on him."
Yes, fair write up. The one thing that stood out to me in those few sentences about Mills was "And he was especially bad without the help of play-action, averaging minus-0.16 EPA per play on standard dropbacks"That's a fair write up...
Some plays are specifically designed to go to that particular receiver. They wanted him to get rid of the ball quickly versus going through progressions. Not just down field, but also outside the numbers. I'm really hoping he plays more loose and free as he gets more experience. He threw the ball where the play was designed to go. Meanwhile, he had the TE open in the middle of the field several times.
And? There's a lot of bad quarterbacking in this league. My chump is better than your chump? If that helps you cheer harder, OK. Doesn't mean you have a franchise QB on your hands.Where’s the lie though? Are we supposed to pretend that Davis Mills, a third rounder, did not outplay Trey Lance and Matt Ryan yesterday?
Dafuck? I pretty much said that on the last sentence of that post you just quoted me on. Why you left it out is beyond me.And? If that helps you cheer harder, OK. Doesn't mean you have a franchise QB on your hands.

You can put a hardhat on a gorilla but you don't want him operating a crane.
Be careful now. I was threatened with a ban for referring to Derapist as ghetto trash because that was a “racist” remark. So please use “furry buddy” instead of the G-word for your protection. Gracias! You can put a hardhat on a gorilla but you don't want him operating a crane.
Watching the game last night I come to realize how much the Texans (Pep & Lovie, probably Caserio) do not like the team they put together. They key to your statement is that he can do all that, but ultimately the question is can he do it consistently enough to build on?

I'm not trying to hurt your feelings. Just talking football.Dafuck? I pretty much said that on the last sentence of that post you just quoted me on. Why you left it out is beyond me.
Dang you got all this after one game.Watching the game last night I come to realize how much the Texans (Pep & Lovie, probably Caserio) do not like the team they put together.
I understand & I'm sure they do as well, it is what it is & you can only do so much with the time given. But they're not happy with their TEs, they're not happy with their WRs, they're not happy with their RBS. & the snap count shows it. imo
I didn't see happy feet.
agreed.. I think ultimately the thing that's gonna make or break him is him being able to anticipate pre-snap what the defense is trying to do to him. I still think he's surprised by some of the things he seeing post snap & that's causing him to be a little late getting through his reads at times & also leads to his placement being off.
i liked Pep's playcalling for the most part. Gave him some easy reads to get the ball out of his hands quickly.
That part about delivering with a dirty pocket is my issue. I've stated this a few times because thats what seperate qbs in this league. You're not going to always allowed to have that nice clean cup. You have to be able to short step and drive the ball and so far he hasn't shown he can do it. That flea flicker was ridiculous and should've been 6. The 1st OJ Howard throw was a good throw. The Nico throw was a very good throw also. Moore saved him on one and he threw a couple that were easy money that were off. All in all, he played about like a expected him to honestly. Like a rookie? Isn't that what he really is?All in all, he played about like a expected him to honestly.
Wasn't just the "rookie" a lot of QBs played below their norms. I blame the cba & the joke TC has become & the way our coaches (especially) treat preseason games.Like a rookie? Isn't that what he really is?
Mills agreed. Said his timing was off with his receivers on some sideline routes. He seemed to indicate he rushed some of the throws so he didn’t take a sack and timing will be emphasized this week to correct it.Every time Mills threw to the sidelines, it just seemed off. Don't know if receivers were running the wrong routes, but I saw a few times the receiver was open, decent pocket, and Mills just missed the receiver.

That link never claimed he was the 8th best QB. Contrary to that it did stateThis is why PFF is Bullshit. You are going to tell me that Mahomes, with his 141 passer rating in week 1, was the 8th best QB in week 1? LOL.
Even with those misses, Mahomes leads the league in EPA this week by a wide margin. This was a virtuoso performance from no. 15—and our first bit of evidence that the Chiefs offense will be just fine without Hill supercharging the deep passing game.
He's not rookie, and my expectations of him are lower than others. Again, I think he's a solid player. I'm not comparing him to other 2nd players, I'm comparing him to qbs as a whole and what I think he is, not what people hope he is. He didn't play a bad game, he played well enough for the team to win.Like a rookie? Isn't that what he really is?
Looks like PFF graded him just a coupe clicks behind a guy named Brady who I believe has been in the league awhile.NFL Week 1 Hype Check: Which Teams Lived Up to Their Offseason Billing—and Which Didn’t?

The Houston Texans actually got a favorable performance out of their second-year quarterback despite the 20-20 tie with the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1 at NRG Stadium.
