Week 14: Texans vs Jets Preview

The Marine

The Houston Texans (7-5) go up against the New York Jets (4-8) in Week 14 on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET (CBS). Below, we look at Texans vs. Jets odds from BetMGM Sportsbook. Also see: SportsbookWire’s NFL picks and predictions.

The Texans defeated the Denver Broncos 22-17 in Week 13, covering as 3-point home favorites, and the Under (47) connected. Houston has won 4 of its last 5 games and is currently on the outside looking in for the AFC playoff picture.

The Jets failed to cover as 2.5-point home underdogs, and the Under (33) hit, in their 13-8 defeat to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13. New York is on a 5-game losing streak and it could be starting its 4th different quarterback this season in Week 14.

One of those games where if you can't take care of business against Tim Boyle or Zach Wilson then you deserve whatever the consequences of losing are.

That being said this actually is probably the game that would hurt the least to lose. Browns and Colts are wild card contenders so those are big games. The Titans are a divisional matchup and overall divisional record could end up being the division tiebreaker so those 2 games are big. Jets aren't a division rival and aren't in the wild card hunt so I guess if we have to lose another game this is the one to drop.

The Jets seem to be good/OK defense, pathetic offense.

Offense averages 260 yds/game (31st) and scores 14.3 pts/game (30th).

Defense gives up 312.7 yds/game (9th) and allows 20.9 pts/game (13th).

That said, they sometimes put it all together and beat good teams. Their 4 wins are over Buffalo, Philly (!), Denver and NYG. They lost by 3 to the Chiefs.

I assume Zach Wilson will start. He's at 1,944 yards, 6 TDs, 7 INTs and a 73.8 passer rating.

Top receiver for the Jets is Garrett Wilson, 67/745, 11.1 avg., 3 TDs.

Top rusher is Breece Hall, 137/585, 4.3 ypc, 2 rushing TDs, 2 receiving TDs

If CBS is still blacked out, the NFLN seems to have kind of a Red Zone thing going on game day. Last week, since my stream was a couple of minutes behind, I was able to catch a few of the Texan scores live on the TV while I watched the delayed action on my computer. However, they (NFLN) will bounce around to many games...

Defense will high off last performance and crank down Jets O as long as they play solid football. Don't go for highlight plays.

Ball control with Stroud using accuracy to hit short plays to move ball. Gamble deep only when target is open and don't force play. No high passes that bounce off our guy to theirs. Use his checkdowns with Brandin Jordan and Singletary. Don't be afraid to punt ball as your defense will get it back. Kick every field goal that is necessary unless you are 10 points or more ahead. Jet should not score more than 21 points and we can absorb that and win. Smarter play calling than NJ will get the victory. Score TD first drive.

Tough to choose who to root for in this one. On the one hand I want the Jets to lose to ensure a higher draft position for the pick owed to the Pack as the final piece of a trade package. On the other hand, being on this forum has made me realize that I actually enjoy witnessing the suffering of SOME Texans fans.:D

I do like Robert Saleh. He and Matt LaFleur are quite close. That whole crew of Saleh, Shanahan, LaFleur, and McVay are very close friends.

What the hell, I will go with the Jets getting the 5.5 points.

We have to play like a dominant team. Defense needs to be solid. Offense needs to protect the ball, but most importantly, protect CJ. Win in the trenches, we win this game.

And please avoid another one score heart attack special.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the Texans win and the Jags and Colts lose (seems fairly reasonable) we are in first place????

If we win three of our last five games the chances are pretty good we'll be in the playoffs. Which also means we can only lose two more games...at most. We can not afford another Carolina letdown.

It will be interesting to see how the game this Sunday afternoon goes given the inclement weather. If it is not as rainy and bad as originally thought and Zach Wilson starts is this...Zach Wilson Stats: Jets QB’s Development Could Save New York’s Season (profootballnetwork.com) the kind of performance we get or will we get this kind of performance.. Cowboys 30-10 Jets (Sep 17, 2023) Final Score - ESPN with his game against the Cowboys being more on par with how he has played for most of his career. Of coarse the one thing that sticks out from his seasons overall stats is that Zach Wilson is not interception prone.

Even if Zach Wilson gets his way and does not play the Jets seem to be weak at Qb no matter who starts! The Jets defense is going to be one of the best if not the best we have faced all season up to this point and it is up to our defense to force turnovers and avoid any on our end! If it comes down to both teams running games I think the Jets have a slight edge!

The Jets defense is 9th in the league. 3rd vs the pass, but 28th vs. the run. Not exactly setting up to the Texans strengths. The Texans will be the 7th top 10 offense the Jets have faced this season. They are 2-4 in the previous 6 games.

I could recite all of the stats that have the Jets offense as either the worst or among the worst. But I would get cramps in my fingers. So, I will point out one thing. The Jets have averaged less than 10 ppg the past 6 weeks. The max points they have scored over that period is 13 (twice). The Texans score 14+ and they come out of New Jersey with a W. That's it.

Wow. That's impressive.

So translated into TexansTalk sounds like the Jets are going to score 27. Zach is going to have a career day, like Desmond Ritter & Bryce Young.

I dunno but I think I'd rather paly a contender with an average roster than a spoiler with a superior roster which the 4-8 Jets are defensively, and then there's the weather which favors a rushing game rather than our passing-oriented offense, another factor which does not bode well for us.

We should have handled our business against the Panthers and we lost. That's it. The Steelers should have handled their business tonight against the Patriots and they lost. That's it. Let's hope our guys are plenty motivated. If they are than we should win with no problem. Zach Wilson has it in him to play at a high level and he did just that in a tough loss to the KC Chiefs earlier this season! If he plays at a high level the Jets could end up with a win! That is if the weather isn't rainy and there is a passing game.
